Canals and Islands of Venice, Italy

We started our tour of the city with a visit to St. Mark's Square and visited the interior of the cathedral. We were not allowed to take photos inside with its mosaic and gold filled images that told the stories of the Bible in images.

We then took a gondola ride with musicians who sang and played the accordion as we traveled through the canals. Video to follow when I get home!

We then took a boat through the lagoon and visited an island on the far side of Venice called Burano.

The island is known for its fresh seafood and hand made lace as well as the distinctive colors of the homes.

The legend of the colors is that the men were traditionally fishermen and could be gone for long stretches. The women living on the island wanted the men to recognize their home as they returned, so the colors were used to mark home.
