Corfu, Greece Photos

The small island behind the convent is what the locals believe is the legendary ship that took Odysseus home.  They believe that Poseidon changed the ship into an island, never to sail again, as punishment for its part in ending the seven year Odyssey that he had sent Odysseus on to keep him from returning home.

The Old Fortress of Corfu from across the other side of the island.

A small, calm piece of the Ionian Sea near the coast of the island.

The Old Fortress was built by the Venetians while they had control of the island in the 15th century.

This gate and wooden bridge connect the Old Fortress with the rest of the island.  It was built in the 1819 when the British had control of the island.

This area within the fortress was used as a square and practice field.

The church of Saint George was built by the Venetians in the 15th century in the Doric style.

Canons were placed above the square in the fortress and would have been able to fire on approaching ships over the short wall along the coast.

Lavender was growing in abundance in the area and most every street and the fortress smelled of the plants in the spring breeze.
