Florence, Italy Photos

The home of the Medici family who were influential in the medieval city.  The were bankers with many important connections.

Through the entrance, an interior garden filled with sculptures can be seen.  The Medici were great benefactors of the arts and brought many artists and scientists to the city.

Through the narrow medieval streets, the baptistery of the Cathedral.

The Basilica of Saint Maria Del Fiore (Cathedral/Duomo)

Among the three colors of marble throughout the cathedral's exterior, frescoes and stained glass windows are above the entrances.

Giotto's Bell Tower was completed in 1359.

The Dome was not built with the rest of the church.  For more than a hundred years, the base of the dome was left open because the architects could not find a way to built a dome that large.  The belief was that, in time, man would find a way to build it in the future.

The markets today were once the location of the banks.  Bankers would have a table among the merchants.  In the event that the bank lost its money, the table of the bank would be cut in half and hung in the market to demonstrate that they were bankrupt.
