Palazzo and Ponte Vecchio

The Medici family was an extremely wealthy family of bankers that had great influence in Florence from the time of the Renaissance until the 18th century.  Their coat of arms (below) can be seen throughout the city.  They married into royal families and were the bankers to the popes.

The Palazzo Vecchio (below) was built in 1295 to host the Priors.  When the government was moved, the Medici family moved into and expanded the palace as a private residence.

The Palazzo Vecchio houses the 14 foot sculpture of David by Michelangelo.  It was originally outside of the palazzo as the replica below.  However, it has to be moved inside of the building because of attempts to vandalize it.
