Dubrovnik, Croatia Photos

My morning cup of tea on the balcony with a view of the newer part of the city.

Below is the completed fort that the people of Dubrovnik partially built to protect them from an invasion.  A great bluff that paid off for the people and bought them time to finish the protective fortress.

The water is so clear!  This is where Game of Thrones filmed the Battle of King's Landing.

The entrance to the medieval city is protected by Saint Blaise above the gate.

There is limited space within the city walls, so the streets were generally very narrow and in the case of Dubrovnik, there are many stairs as well.

The old port of Dubrovnik.

The ring (below) was used to secure the ships within the port.

Located inside of the cloister of the Franciscan Monastery, built in 1360, this is not a typical well.  It works like a well, but the water collected below is from a cistern, not a well.  It was built to provide the medieval city with access to clean water in the event that they were under siege and the water from the aqueduct was poisoned.  The cistern was not needed in the middle ages, but was used by the people of Dubrovnik in the 20th century when the city was under siege during the Homeland War.
